Recommended Costa Rica Health Insurance Options

(Updated March 15, 2022)  (All COVID related entry requirements are lifted after March 31. 2022)

Un-vaccinated adult visitors will need Costa Rica travel insurance throughout their entire stay in the country.  Visitors under 18 and fully vaccinated adult visitors with a “COVID-19 vaccination record card” provided by their health provider are exempt from this requirement.

We recommend TRAWICK INSURANCE for  insurance required to enter Costa Rica. Their international travel insurance policy is underwritten by Nationwide Insurance and they have a 4.9 rating on TrustPilot.com with hundreds of reviews. SAFE TRAVELS VOYAGER is the policy they offer that covers all Costa Rica entry requirements.

For information visit: TRAWICK Travel Insurance for Costa Rica.  Get a quote for the correct policy for Costa Rica here. (If buying insurance for more than one person, use the NUMBER OF TRAVELERS button, then enter the info for each extra person.

When filling in the form for a quote, use $500 for the “trip cost” for each person in your party. This will provide a quote for the basic coverage that far exceeds the Costa Rican minimums and costs no more than If you entered $0 for trip cost. In other words, $500 of your prepaid trip costs, like airline tickets and hotel deposits are covered in the basic policy for free. If you want insurance that covers more than $500 of the prepaid trip costs per person, enter the actual amount of these costs in the “trip cost” box. The quote will be higher and depends on the amount over $500 you enter.

The insurance policy must also match your arrival and departure dates, so you are covered for every day you will be in Costa Rica.

When you complete payment for the policy you will receive an Insurance Purchase Notification email.

  • Download the Visa Letter/Confirmation of Coverage document.  Save it to a computer.
  • You will need to upload the Visa Letter/Confirmation of Coverage document into a Health Pass form from your computer.
  • Currently, phone operating systems are not compatible with the Health Pass form. See below for more info on that form.

The policy will be sent to you immediately once payment is complete, so there is no need to buy insurance until shortly before your departure date.

You must show evidence of a return flight to be admitted as a tourist to Costa Rica, such as an itinerary confirmation email from your airline. Bring it with you on your phone.

Costa Rica Health Pass Form Instructions

The required health pass for Costa Rica can be obtained by filling out the Health Pass form online. However, it cannot be filled out until 48 hours before your departureEach person in your party must complete a separate Health Pass form.

Do it one or two days before departure on a computer (currently, Android and I-phone don’t work) where you have access either a “COVID-19 vaccination record card” or the Visa Letter/Confirmation of Insurance Coverage document. You will upload one or the other into the form.  After completing the Health Pass form you will receive an email titled “CR Pase de Salud: QR…” sent to the email address you gave in the form. It will contain an attachment with your QR code.  Capture it on your phone.  You will be required to show this QR code at check-in for your flight to Costa Rica and at the immigration booth in the airport in San Jose.

To sum it all up, you need three documents to enter Costa Rica: proof of a return ticket, a QR Code generated by the Health Pass form and a passport. With these three documents you should be able to easily and quickly board your flight to Costa Rica and pass through immigration on your arrival.

“Beautiful place with all you could hope for. Ocean and jungle sounds and easy access to the beach and natural surroundings. Definitely consider having them prepare food for you, it is delicious and well worth it. We love this area and will be back again.”

“Off-grid perfection, the location is just perfect. True to its description, you can see monkeys and other wild animals from the comfort of your balcony (Casa Pina). And you’ll see more just hiking around the neighborhood.”

“It’s hard to get more remote, and still be comfortable. Bamboo house, solar powered but it all works. In a beautiful place, steps from the water, and rain forest and Osa fauna all around. A great get away. You have your own place but with tours and assistance available onsite. Very helpful hosts!”

“Wild, remote and beautiful – the Osa Peninsula is a very special place and Casa Bambu is perfectly situated beside a beautiful beach at the edge of the jungle. We stayed in Casa Sonrisa, a short walk to the beach, up on a hill with nice views, privacy and gentle breezes. The house is ingeniously built with thoughtful attention to the practical necessities.”
